Red eyes are a common occurrence, and we all have had them at one time or another. Eye redness can be caused by several different things, including bacterial or viral infections, allergies, or systemic disease. Optometrists are equipped to find the source of eye redness and relieve it.
Additionally, optometrists often diagnose and begin treatment for other eye diseases including, but not limited to glaucoma, macular degeneration, keratoconus, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and dry eyes. If you or anyone in your family history suffered from any of these diseases, it is wise to be examined by an optometrist annually, as many of these diseases have hereditary components.
